Collaboration with GroundWork Associates: "Climate Change NOW!" Permanent Exhibition

It is great to work together with a consulting and research group that specialises on the topics close to my heart. GroundWork Associates (www.groundworkassociates.co.nz) have carried out a significant body of work for different organisations, including Government. That is why it was my pleasure to collaborate with them and offer my Climate Change works to serve as a backdrop to environmental issues being discussed.

Last on an activism note, see the Sustainable Waikato group formed by a group of citizens whose mission is to ensure we get the councillors that the city and the region deserve, councillors who are not single issue focussed. We want councillors who can assess a range of issues rationally and make decisions based on sound evidence, enhancing our region's sustainability in the near and intergenerational future".

Disparity Between Groups of People

Some people are lucky - they have everything. Others feel alienated from the mainstream - because of economic or health reasons... Handicapped people are one group that is feeling left out...


"The rich people live in beautifully coloured houses with flowers in their gardens. They have a gorgeous view on the lake. Their houses are ornate with windows from where lights shine through. They are having a good time, they are having parties. You can almost hear the music from where you stand. The poor people are just in black and white houses, and shades of grey in between and no gardens. There are no windows in the poor houses, their outlook is bleak. The painting compares wealth and poverty and poses questions: "will the rich people help their poor neighbours?" "Will they actually fish in the lake for them?""

This is of course an homage to Hundertwasser...

Graphic design and complexity of climate change...

I worry about climate change and our impact on the world and think about how pictures can make an impact on people's attitudes...

Are we going to end up looking at trees on billboards... or in shop windows??? How can we express the complexities of the weather so that we can act before it is too late?

"Highly Commended" Award at the 2009 Great Waikato Art Show

The 2009 Great Waikato Art Show took place during the Waikato Home and Garden Show in September 2009. The Waikato Home and Garden Show has been defined as "A show of high energy, innovation and inspiration" and showcases the largest and very latest range of products, services and ideas for building and redecorating to its 30,000 visitors. Design ideas from throughout New Zealand and overseas are on display in a showroom organised for the industry experts, professionals, Municipalities and Government Parks and Garden Departments to meet.

This is where I launched the second year of my campaign to raise awareness of the impact on climate change on urban landscapes with the painting called "Hurricanes" (Acrylic on canvas, 120 cm X 92cm) - and the painting got the "Highly Commended" Award!

The last two award-winning paintings are now exhibited at the office of Antanas Procuta Architect in Hamilton and we are collaborating on designing a large art installation for the Clean Energy Centre that they are building which will be a technology incubator for new energy projects.

You may have been to some special garden which is like this one - just as you walk towards the castle ahead of you then the beautiful garden that is to your left and right tells you that the building ahead of you has a beautiful princess like Sleeping Beauty. Pollution disrupts this peace...

Beautiful Garden with Flowers (Acrylic on canvas - 91cm X 61cm) exhibited in a virtual space using dumpr tool.

This painting was exhibited in the University of Waikato, Momento Gallery. It was inspired by a famous painting - A pathway in Claude Monet's garden. I just loved the combination of lines and colours leading up to the house.

2010-11 clips:

This animation clip was made during a Feb 2009 claymation workshop (Waikato Museum/Wintec). Yaniv Janson animates a puppet interacting with a doll as his inspiration. Puppet and doll share some memories about the Awards night when "The enchanted forest" (featuring as itself in the animation) was selected as a finalist in the 2008 Trust Waikato National Contemporary Arts Awards. The puppet is then inspired to create another painting and once it is hung on the wall, reality and dream merge as the puppet "jumps into the painting". This idea is only slightly reminiscent of Mary Poppins' scene as puppet and (inspiration) doll merge with electronic effects and send their message of hope: "Free the artist within" - yes, you too!
